Briton Wanted For Trying To Overthrow The Government

The Nigeria Police Force, on Monday, 2 August, declared a British national, Andrew Wynne, wanted.

They also declared a Nigerian, Lucky Obiyan, wanted. Both men are accused of allegedly plotting to overthrow the democratically elected government in the country.

The police accused the British national of building a network of sleeper cells to overthrow the government and plunge the nation into chaos.

Earlier, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, remanded 10 people in Kuje prison on charges of treason, which they allegedly committed during the “End Bad Governance” protest that took place between August 1 and August 10, 2024.

They will remain in prison until the court hears and rules on their bail application, which is scheduled for 11 September 2024.

Treason is a serious crime involving the betrayal of one’s country, either by attempting to overthrow the government, assisting enemies during wartime, or engaging in actions that threaten the security of the state.

The Nigerian government arraigned the 10 activists in court on Monday before Justice Nwite, who is one of the two vacation judges holding hearings as the Federal High Court is currently on its annual vacation.

All of the suspects pleaded not guilty to the six-count charges of treason, felony, destruction of public property, and injuring police officers.

The accused persons are Michael Adaramoye, also known as Michael Lenin, Adeyemi Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaoluwa Simeon, and Angel Love Innocent.

The others are Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello, Nurudeen Khamis, and Abdulsalam Zubairu.

One of the allegations states that the accused persons conspired with one Andrew Martin Wynne, a British citizen, “to destabilize Nigeria by calling on the military to take over the government from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, by shouting ‘Tinubu must go, soja muskeso’, meaning ‘Tinubu must go, it’s the military we want’.”
