FAO Issues Serious Warning To Nigeria As Devastating Flood Rocks The Nation

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has issued a warning over the increasing floods in Nigeria, which are making the country’s already dire situation of food insecurity worse.

The floods, which have impacted 29 states, are killing people, ruining farms, and uprooting thousands of people, according to the FAO.

“As of the beginning of September, over 2.5 million individuals have been affected, with approximately 200 000 being displaced,” stated Koffy Dominique Kouacou, the acting representative of the FAO, in a statement.

Kouacou reports that the FAO is extremely concerned about the possibility of food insecurity, given that around 31.8 million Nigerians are already at risk of severe food crisis.

He went on to say that swift, concerted action is required to stop the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria from getting worse.

“The widespread loss of farmland will severely affect food security, and the floods continue to push vulnerable communities deeper into poverty,” Kouacou said.
