PDP vs INEC

Accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of flagrant disregard for a court order, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has revealed that the electoral body has deliberately obstructed the party’s access to crucial election materials, which were to be inspected for purposes of filing an election petition.

Despite obtaining a ruling from the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on September 29, 2024, allowing the PDP’s legal team and forensic experts to scrutinize vital election materials in INEC’s custody, including voter registers, ballot papers, and BVAS results, the electoral body reportedly stalled the process, leaving the PDP with only five days to file its petition.

Amid rising tensions in Edo State, the PDP decried INEC’s actions as a “blatant attack on democracy,” alleging that powerful forces may be at play to undermine the legal process.

Moreover, the PDP’s legal team hinted at pursuing contempt charges against INEC officials and possible legal action against the Nigerian Police for their involvement in the alleged obstruction of justice.

As supporters of the PDP rally behind the party’s legal battle, the escalating situation highlights the precarious nature of democracy and the need for robust mechanisms to safeguard it from potential subversion.
