Sinach Alleged Copyright Infringement
A lawsuit has been filed against popular gospel artist Sinach, alleging copyright infringement. The plaintiff, music producer Michael Oluwole, also known as Maye, is seeking N5 billion in damages.
The case, scheduled for hearing on November 27, 2024, revolves around the song “Way Maker.” Maye claims to be a co-owner of the song, which he alleges was released by Sinach in 2015 without his permission or compensation.
Maye asserts that he was responsible for recording, mixing, and mastering the song, and that he contributed instrumental accompaniments without a formal agreement. He accuses Sinach of generating licensing fees without sharing any proceeds.
Sinach, through her lawyer Emeka Etiaba, denies the allegations. She claims sole authorship of the song, which she says was composed in collaboration with others. Sinach contends that Maye’s involvement was limited to mixing the track, for which he was paid.
The song “Way Maker” has become an international hit, with over 100 million views on YouTube and multiple awards. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for intellectual property disputes within Nigeria’s music industry.
