Abuja Medical Center Inaugurates Committee For Kidney Transplant
A steering committee on kidney transplants has been established by the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Abuja, as part of efforts to manage the nation’s growing kidney failure cases.
The chairman of the group of eminent medical professionals is Dr. Ernest Aniede, a leading consultant nephrologist.
The FMC’s public relations officer, Mr. Obadiah N.K. Gana, revealed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.
According to the statement, the committee’s formation is a proactive response to the rising number of renal disease-related mortality in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the nation as a whole.
Although treating kidney-related conditions, particularly transplants, is expensive, the FMC is taking steps to overcome the lack of knowledge in the area.
Prof. Saad Ahmed, the FMC’s Medical Director, who also served as the committee’s inaugural chair, explained that the action was taken in advance of the FCT’s kidney transplant program starting.
In his speech to Aniede and the other committee members, Ahmed tasked them with working together as a team with the utmost devotion and commitment in order to successfully launch the facility’s kidney transplant procedures.
As she handed the committee members their official letters, the medical director urged them to give the task the due consideration.
