A ceasefire deal between Israel and Hezbollah is reportedly close, with a regional source stating it’s “very close” ¹. This comes as the death toll in Lebanon since mid-September has surpassed 3,000 people, according to Lebanese health ministry figures.
The proposed ceasefire deal includes a 60-day pause in fighting, which could potentially form the basis of a lasting ceasefire. US envoy Amos Hochstein has been holding talks with regional officials to try to reach a deal. However, some issues still need to be addressed, and US and Israeli officials have cautioned that no green light has been given to mediators yet.
Israel launched a major offensive in Lebanon in mid-September, following months of tit-for-tat border attacks. Since then, Israel has launched a ground invasion, killed several Hezbollah leaders, and injured thousands of people.
The urgency of a ceasefire deal is underscored by the mounting death toll. On Saturday, Israeli attacks killed at least 84 people and injured 213, according to the Lebanese health ministry. A total of 3,072 people have been killed and 13,426 injured since Israel stepped up its campaign against Hezbollah on September 16.
