Cholera: Edo State Govt Confirms One New Case Of Outbreak
The Ministry of Health’s state director of public health, Dr Ojeifo Stephenson, revealed this to Channels Television on Saturday.
He stated that since January, the state administration has taken proactive steps to educate the public about the need to report symptoms to the closest authorized health facilities.
“In Edo State, we’ve identified 11 suspected cases as of January,” he added. “Whenever they receive an alert about a suspected case, we mobilize our team to go in, gather samples, and then trace the contacts.”
Contacts are those who are directly connected to the suspected case. We always monitor them during the virus’s incubation phase before letting them go. Eight were non-reactive and eight were reactive following those tests.
According to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), children aged 0 to 5 years old constituted the majority of those impacted by the country’s Mpox outbreak.
According to the organization, children aged 0 to 5 make up the majority of those afflicted by the 48 confirmed instances of pox that have been reported in Nigeria this year. It is said that interaction with contaminated items or diseased individuals can readily transmit pox.
Eight new confirmed cases were reported across five states during reporting week 34 (August 19–25), according to an update report on the disease from the NCDC. This brings the overall number of confirmed cases in 2024 to 48.
An additional analysis of the case data revealed that, in week 34 of 2024, there were 57 new suspected cases reported, as opposed to 25 instances in week 33. In contrast to the one verified incidence reported in week 33 of 2024, eight confirmed cases were reported in week 34. In 2024, at least one confirmed case has been reported in 35 Local Government Areas in 20 states plus the Federal Capital.
