In a bold response to the growing threat of illicit goods entering Nigeria via Onne Port, the Federal Government has declared a state of emergency at the Port, implementing emergency protocols for the next three months to thoroughly examine all suspicious containers.
Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adeniyi announced the move during a press conference, expressing grave concern over the recurring incidents of national security breaches.
Adeniyi stated, “While our policy thrust supports re-energizing our business environment, criminal elements in the international supply chain are exploiting our pro-trade stance to commit atrocities bordering on national security breaches.”
The declaration of the state of emergency is the Nigerian government’s response to the increasing attempts to smuggle dangerous goods, including arms and ammunition, into the country through Onne Port. Adeniyi warned criminals that the Customs Service, in collaboration with other security agencies, will not hesitate to enforce the law against anyone involved in these “crimes against our nation.”
He commended the officers of the Onne Command for their diligence in seizing 12 containers of illicit goods, worth over N3.1 billion, through inter-agency collaboration and intelligence gathering.
