DJ Cuppy: First British-Nigerian to host opening session in UNGA

History was made at the 2024 UNGA Summit when Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, became the first British-Nigerian to host an opening session. With her philanthropic background and ambitions for political office, the 32-year-old grabbed the limelight and spotlighted the need for more female leaders in Africa.

During her hosting of the Youth Action Day, which focused on the theme “The Summit of the Future – Youth Actions Day,” Cuppy playfully teased her future ambitions.

DJ Cuppy’s bid to become Nigeria’s first female president is not just an idea plucked from thin air. The talented DJ and businesswoman has been putting in the groundwork to make her dream a reality.

Through her Cuppy Foundation, she has been empowering young women and men with education opportunities and providing critical relief to vulnerable communities across Nigeria. This work has earned her a significant level of public support, and many believe she has the potential to be a successful political leader.

During the UNGA Summit, her exchange with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J.

DJ Cuppy’s exchange with Amina J. Mohammed was not only humorous, but it also underscored the importance of female leadership, not just in Africa, but around the world.

In many African countries, women still face significant obstacles in achieving political power. Despite the fact that women make up half of the population, they are often underrepresented in positions of leadership. This lack of representation means that women’s voices and perspectives are not adequately heard in decision-making processes, which can perpetuate gender inequality.

DJ Cuppy’s journey to becoming Nigeria’s first female president, if she is successful, would be groundbreaking. It would signify a major shift in the country’s political landscape and could inspire other young women to pursue their political ambitions.

Moreover, DJ Cuppy’s potential election as president could bring a fresh perspective to Nigeria’s political discourse. As a young, female leader, she would be well-positioned to champion issues that are often overlooked by traditional male-dominated leadership, such as gender equality, women’s rights, and the needs of marginalized communities.

Not only could DJ Cuppy’s potential presidency bring positive change to Nigeria, but it could also have a ripple effect across the African continent.

For decades, African politics has been male-dominated, with few female leaders rising to prominence. However, recent years have seen a gradual shift towards greater gender parity in politics. For example, in Ethiopia, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed a gender-balanced cabinet in 2018, making Ethiopia one of only a handful of countries worldwide with equal numbers of male and female ministers.
