Edo Election: PDP Refuses To Sign Peace Accord
Other parties, such as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Monday Okpebholo, signed the Peace Accord, despite the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, choosing not to. Additionally, Olumide Akpata, the candidate for the Labour Party, signed.
The peace agreement was also signed by the Accord Party, Accord Alliance, African Action Congress, African Democratic Congress, and Action Democratic Party.
In addition, there are the Allied Peoples Movement, Action Peoples Party, Labour Party, National Rescue Movement, Peoples Redemption Party, Social Democratic Party, Youth Party, Young Progressives Party (YPP), and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
At the location of the peace accord’s signing on Thursday in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, former head of state General Abdulsalami Abubakar stated that the PDP chose not to sign a peace treaty.
While thanking those who signed the peace pact, the former Head of State said, “As you must have seen in the media, I met the Governor (Godwin Obaseki) yesterday and he told me that the PDP is not going to sign this peace accord.
“They have made some observations, and I had anticipated that the PDP Chairman would arrive and provide that comment. After waiting for him for so long, I would want to inform you that the PDP has stated they would not be signing.
He claimed the PDP has stated it would only sign the peace agreement when certain requirements were satisfied.
Tony Aziegbemi, the state chairman of the PDP, was present at the event but declined to comment on the party’s refusal to sign the agreement.
Obaseki charged earlier on Wednesday that security personnel were favoring the APC. He claimed that the police had acquired warrants, detained PDP members, and effectively forced the party’s leaders into hiding.
“We have no confidence that the police are going to protect us in this election until everybody (party members) arrested in Edo is released or brought back to Edo to be tried for whatever offences you claimed they have committed,” Governor Obaseki stated.
Additionally, Don-Pedro Obaseki, the PDP campaign’s deputy director general, provided justifications for the party’s refusal to sign on the same day.
He said this while making an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He also gave updates on the voter registration process, stating that 2,629,025 people in Edo State are currently registered to vote.
A non-governmental organization made up of the nation’s elder statesmen, the National Peace Committee was established in 2014 with the goal of advancing free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections.
