The Committee for the Establishment of the National Health Facility Regulatory Agency (NHFRA) was established by the federal government to oversee the evaluation of health facility rules.

It was decided that the committee was required to address gaps and problems with cooperation across health authorities in order to raise the quality of healthcare.

During the inauguration in Abuja on Wednesday, Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, stated that the committee will be in charge of creating the legislative framework, operational guidelines, and governance framework for the NHFRA.

He claims that in addition to overseeing healthcare facilities’ adherence to strict regulations and quality standards, the committee, which is comprised of representatives from the public and private sectors as well as associations and regulatory bodies, will also work to end malpractice and guarantee that healthcare providers are working under ideal conditions.

Dr. Richard Ajayi, Chairman of Bridge Clinic, is in charge of the committee. Other members of the group include Prof. Abubakar Kullima, Director of Clinical Services (State); Omede Idris from the Nigeria Medical Association; Nnaemeka Nwakanma from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria; Njide Ndili, Country Director of PharmAccess; Prof. Abubakar Kullima, Director of Ogun State Commissioner for Health; Prof. Abubakar Kullima, Director of Clinical Services (State); Dr. Damilola Matti from the Society for Quality in Healthcare in Nigeria; and Tosin Runsewe from the Health Federation of Nigeria, among others.

Citing previous scandals like illicit organ trafficking, the minister emphasized the urgent need for a robust regulatory framework to address important concerns in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

The Minister gave the committee assurance that it is well-positioned to accomplish the objectives set before it, even if she acknowledged that the group’s creation is an essential first step toward upholding safety regulations and winning back public confidence.
