Investigating journalist David Hundeyin has come forward to shed light on the events that led to the Nigeria Police Force’s declaration that he was an accomplice in the trial of whistleblower Isaac Tamunobifiri, also known as PIDOM.
In an interview with News Central Television, Hundeyin revealed that he suspected his involvement in PIDOM’s case was part of a larger scheme by the state security apparatus to rope him into a criminal investigation in order to discredit his international refugee status and curtail his ability to travel freely.
Hundeyin disclosed that he had taken precautions prior to the allegations being made public, such as replacing his devices due to hacking attempts, which he believed were orchestrated by state security agents.
The journalist reiterated that his involvement in PIDOM’s case was not due to any wrongdoing on his part, but rather, a part of a wider campaign by the Nigerian authorities to target and silence journalists and whistleblowers who challenge the government’s narrative.
Hundeyin also expressed concern that the ongoing investigation may lead to his inclusion on an Interpol notice list, which would severely impede his ability to travel freely.
The investigative journalist highlighted the apparent contradiction between the government’s aggressive pursuit of journalists and whistleblowers and its comparatively lacklustre response to more pressing issues such as the Boko Haram insurgency and public corruption.
He emphasized that his commitment to exposing the truth and holding those in power accountable remains unwavering, regardless of the risks involved.
Hundeyin’s claims of government harassment and intimidation also shed light on a broader pattern of repression and abuse of power that has been observed in Nigeria in recent years.
From the arrest of journalists and social media activists to the use of arbitrary detention and extrajudicial killings, human rights organizations have documented a concerning trend of rights violations under the current administration.
Against this backdrop, Hundeyin’s assertion that he is being targeted for his work as a journalist is not only credible but also indicative of a larger problem that threatens freedom of expression and transparency in Nigeria.
