Kano State Rollout Polio Eradication Campaign

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to stamping out polio and other communicable diseases among children. Speaking at the launch of the 2024 polio eradication campaign in Dawakin Kudu local government, Yusuf promised to collaborate with local communities to ensure all children in the state are vaccinated.

The governor emphasized the importance of maintaining good hygiene and urged parents to make their children available for immunisation. He assured that the state government would be committed to policies and programmes that will enhance the overall wellbeing of citizens.

Building on the governor’s pledge, the Chairman of the State Task Force on Polio Eradication and Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, expressed gratitude to the various partners for their joint effort to rid the state, and the country at large, of poliomyelitis.

Gwarzo reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to cooperate with donor agencies in the fight against this debilitating disease.

The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Yusuf, explained that Dawakin Kudu was chosen to host the flag-off event because of its low routine immunisation coverage, which highlights the need to intensify vaccination efforts in that area.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has dispatched a team of 484 Field Volunteers, 68 Enhanced Independent Monitors, 45 Local Government Facilitators, 19 Assistant Public Health Officers and six Management Support Team members to provide technical support and ensure that every child receives the necessary vaccinations.

The event, attended by representatives from various local, state and international organisations, demonstrated a unified front in the fight against polio and other communicable diseases.

Despite the challenges that lie ahead, the commitment and collaboration among these stakeholders offer hope for a healthier future for the children of Kano State and beyond.

With the governor’s continued support and the dedication of health workers and community members, it is hoped that the goal of eradicating polio will soon be realised.
