Nationwide Thunderstorms:NiMet Warn

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of possible heavy thunderstorms nationwide, starting from Monday, September 23, and lasting till Wednesday, September 25, 2024.

The agency, in its weather outlook released on Sunday, predicted morning thunderstorms over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Borno states, with more storms expected over other states, including Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, and Taraba, later in the day.

During the morning hours, NiMet warned of thunderstorms over parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, and Kwara states. By afternoon and evening, the agency predicted isolated thunderstorms over parts of Kwara, FCT, Niger, Benue, and Kogi states.

Residents in the Southwest inland, particularly in Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ogun states, were warned to expect rains, with the storms expected to spread to the coastal states of Lagos, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa states during the morning hours.

NiMet envisaged thunderstorms over parts of Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, Ondo, Abia, Osun, Imo, Ekiti, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, and Lagos states later in the day.

On Tuesday, the agency predicted thunderstorms over parts of the FCT, Niger, Benue, and Nasarawa states during the morning hours. In the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are expected over the FCT, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue states.

Meanwhile, morning rains are expected over parts of Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Lagos, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers states, with more thunderstorms expected in the FCT and Plateau states during the day.

NiMet cautioned residents to avoid flood-prone areas as the heavy downpours could lead to urban flooding in major cities. Additionally, strong winds may accompany the thunderstorms, and the public is advised to take appropriate precautions. The agency urged residents to stay informed through weather updates from NiMet and advised the public and airline operators to consult NiMet for up-to-date weather reports and forecasts to ensure safe operations.
