The Monkey pox situation report was posted on the NCDC’s website on Friday. The agency reports that no deaths have been reported from the outbreak thus far.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, or NCDC, confirmed eight new cases of Mpox last week, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 48, out of 868 suspected cases, across 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The NCDC reported that the outbreak is spreading to 35 Local Government Areas, with 19 states and the FCT recording one confirmed case each. A notable surge was observed in week 34, with eight confirmed cases reported, compared to just one case in week 33.
According to the records, “Others are Plateau (two), Akwa Ibom (four), Nasarawa (one), Oyo (one), Kaduna (one), Ebonyi (one), Benue (three), Enugu (eight), Osun (two), Kebbi (one), and Zamfara (one).”
Lagos recorded (one), Rivers (two), Bayelsa (six), Abia (one), Delta (two), Imo (one), Edo (one), FCT (two), Anambra (two), and Cross River (five) cases.
In addition to stating that eight confirmed cases were recorded in week 34 of 2024 as opposed to one (1) confirmed case reported in week 33, the report explained that “57 new suspected cases were identified in Epi week 34, 2024, compared to the 25 cases reported during the previous week (Epi week 33)”.
It went on to explain that in 2024, at least one confirmed case had been reported in twenty states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) across thirty-five (35) Local Government Areas.
It emphasized that the cumulative number of confirmed cases had an distribution of ages: 17 cases were reported in ages 0–10, 7 in ages 11–20, 9 in ages 21–30, 8 in ages 31–40, and 7 in ages 41–50.
The NCDC reported throughout the week that as part of the country’s attempts to contain the illness outbreak, the United States government donated 10,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine to Nigeria.
It stated that the vaccination was formally given to the Nigerian government on Tuesday in an event conducted in Abuja.
The vaccination was authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent smallpox and mumps in adults who are at risk. In the same era, it was reported that following a 160% spike in cases this year, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) reaffirmed its declaration of mpox as a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS).
