Vice President Kashim Shettima convened the NEC meeting on Wednesday, when the deadline was announced. The acting governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, briefed State House Correspondents shortly after the meeting, which took place in the Council Chamber of the State House Abuja.

He stated that, of the 36 states, four had not yet submitted their positions to the NEC. Lawal claims that the NEC ordered the four states to announce their positions by Monday.

The four states were not discussed at the meeting, but NEC emphasized that starting on Monday, any state that did not submit would be forced to accept the final judgment. Requests State Police Assistance.

The topic of state police has dominated discussions over the past few years. Governors and local sociopolitical organizations, like as Afenifere and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, have claimed that the police will stop the alarming trend of kidnapping, banditry, and other miscellaneous crimes.

President Bola Tinubu and the governors of the 36 states came to an agreement in the middle of February 2024 in response to calls for the establishment of a state police. They decided to use state police to stop the nation’s growing security threats.

Sixteen governors reported to the National Economic Council (NEC) a month after the agreement was reached, endorsing the establishment of state police and amending the 1999 Constitution to permit their establishment. Since then, a total of four states have not yet given their viewpoints on the matter due to the submissions made by other states.

Despite the fact that many individuals and organizations have advocated for the establishment of state police, the idea has encountered opposition from certain places.

Some people think that state police financing would be difficult because some governors would like an increase in the monthly allotments to their states.

There have also been arguments made by some that state governors will harass their political rivals via the state police.
