Nigeria-China Alliance: Tegbe Appointed

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has appointed Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe to the newly created role of Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China strategic partnership. This development comes in response to the recent commitments made between the two countries to collaborate on medical research and establish hospital alliances.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, released a statement on Sunday announcing the appointment.

Tegbe, a first-class graduate in civil engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University and fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, will lead day-to-day operations and engage with Chinese counterparts to ensure the successful implementation of the partnership agreements.

The Director-General will report directly to President Tinubu and is tasked with developing a strategic action plan for Nigeria to fully leverage the opportunities offered by the China-Nigeria agreements. This plan will outline specific projects, investments, and projected socioeconomic outcomes for each area of cooperation.

The appointment of Tegbe to this crucial role reflects the Nigerian government’s commitment to solidifying ties with China and harnessing its resources to advance the country’s economic diversification, infrastructure development, technology transfer, and job creation.

The 360 billion yuan ($51 billion) in new financing pledged by President Xi Jinping to African nations in the next three years, as well as the agreement between the two leaders, underscores the vast potential for Nigeria to benefit from this strategic partnership.

The success of this strategic partnership will depend on the effective implementation of the action plan and the close collaboration between Tegbe and his Chinese counterparts.

Given the importance of this partnership to Nigeria’s economic growth and development, it is crucial that Tegbe and his team prioritize transparency, accountability, and the sustainable management of resources to ensure the long-term success of the collaboration.

As Nigeria and China deepen their ties, it will be important to monitor the progress of this strategic partnership and assess its impact on the country’s economy and society.
