NLC Orders Federal Government To Release Ajaero Immediately
President Bola Tinubu is setting a new record for impunity with the attack on Ajaero, according to a statement released on Monday by Isa Sanusi, the Director of Amnesty International Nigeria.
While traveling to the United Kingdom for a formal assignment, Ajaero was detained on Monday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, according to the NLC. The NLC president was scheduled to be present at the opening of the Trade Union Congress convention in London on Monday.
According to Sanusi, “Amnesty International strongly condemns the Department of State Services’ (DSS) unlawful arrest of Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), today.” The union president needs to be freed right away and without conditions.
The unjustifiable detention of Joe Ajaero demonstrates the President Bola Tinubu administration’s growing crackdown on human rights and limitations on public space.
The administration of President Bola Tinubu continuously targets and impedes the NLC’s ability to carry out its functions through the use of false accusations, raids on the organization’s headquarters, and other types of coercion and harassment.
“Over the past year, Amnesty International has witnessed the Nigerian government’s growing attack on civic space and labour unions. The government still uses the SSS and police as weapons to deny Nigerians their human rights.
The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, to which Nigeria is a party, protect the freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, and association, including participation in and activities related to trade unions.
Additionally, the nation belongs to the International Labour Organization, a group whose core values, which include the freedom to organize, apply to all of its members. Itravellingnal human rights legislation prohibits discrimination against employees for engaging in union activity.
The statement concluded, saying, “Joe Ajaero must be released immediately and unconditionally. He is being arrested solely for the peaceful exercise of his human rights.”
