Whereas a third-wheel assembly will frequently be needed to provide additional support for the plane’s tail.



  • Tandem landing gear: (also called bicycle landing gear) As the name suggests, this style of the landing gear has the main and tail gears positioned one behind the other, with the two sets of wheels aligned on the aircraft’s longitudinal axis. On the aircraft’s longitudinal axis, the main gear and tail gear are lined up. Tandem gear is frequently used by sailplanes, military bombers like the B-47 and B-52, and the U2 spy plane.


  • Retractable gear: The function of retractable gears is that they retract into the wings and fuselage with wheels flush with the surrounding surface or hidden behind flush-mounted doors that are used to reduce drag during flight. In contrast to retractable gear, semi-retractable gear has wheels that partially protrude into the airstream rather than retract completely.

The nose landing gear is typically used to maneuver the aircraft while it is on the ground in most aircraft designs. NLG is mostly retracted forward, giving the pilot the ability to simply turn the controls in the flight deck in the direction that he wishes the plane to turn. NLG doesn’t serve the purpose of brake in an aircraft, where Every aircraft has its brake where its main braking pressure is applied to the tires and gear at the center of the airplane.
