Shettima Seeks More Support For Flood Victims In Borno State
Following his meeting with the UN Secretary-General, the vice president, who is representing President Bola Tinubu at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, was greeted at the UN building by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.
During their discussions, Vice President Shettima emphasized the critical need for relief measures to mitigate the severe consequences of climate change and brought attention to the recent devastation sustained by inhabitants of Borno State, North East Nigeria.
He praised the UN’s efforts and demanded more assistance in stabilizing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) area and putting in place long-term, well-coordinated relief measures for flood victims throughout Nigeria.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, on his part, offered the international organization’s deepest sympathies on the terrible losses in Nigeria.
In addition to applauding President Tinubu’s leadership, he stated that the UN is prepared to step up its interventions and support for Nigeria and that Nigeria is an essential ally in the UN’s quest for a peaceful Africa.
One of the deadliest floods in Nigerian history was recently caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam.
