Tinubu Taps Oluyede As Acting COAS
President Bola Tinubu has made an official announcement, appointing Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS). This decision follows the leave of absence taken by the incumbent Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.
The Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, had earlier dismissed rumors of Lagbaja’s death and confirmed that he was on leave.
According to President Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, Oluyede has had a long and illustrious career in the Nigerian Army, serving in various capacities. He has led platoons, companies, and brigades in numerous operations, including the ECOMOG Mission in Liberia and Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi.
A highly decorated officer, Oluyede has been awarded several honors, including the Corps Medal of Honour, Grand Service Star, and membership in the National Institute.
While Lagbaja remains the substantive COAS, Oluyede’s appointment ensures that the Nigerian Army continues to have a capable and experienced commander at its helm.
As he assumes his new role, Oluyede faces the significant challenge of leading the Army in the face of ongoing security threats in Nigeria, including the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East, banditry in the North West, and separatist agitation in the South East.
