Umahi Vows To Be Accountable For Bad Roads in Ondo
Addressing the issue of poorly constructed roads in Nigeria, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, declared his willingness to accept responsibility for any shortcomings. Umahi, who asserted that the current administration has no reason not to finish the road projects it has embarked on, emphasized that the ministry is ready to terminate contracts with any erring companies without hesitation.
This statement was made during a town hall meeting on the alignment of the Ondo State segment of the Lagos/Calabar coastal highway.
During the event, Umahi revealed that the government of President Bola Tinubu inherited over 2,000 abandoned road projects, amounting to trillions of naira. Despite this daunting challenge, Umahi noted that President Tinubu is determined to complete these projects and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
The minister further emphasized that the Lagos/Calabar coastal highway, which passes through seven states, will bring economic opportunities and development to the country.
As part of the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, the minister announced that all federal road controllers have been instructed to provide details of road projects within their jurisdictions, regardless of whether they have been awarded or not. The aim is to ensure that all federal high roads are motorable by Christmas.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for the initiative, stating that the project is not politically motivated but rather intended to benefit the people of Ondo State.
