VP Shettima visits Flooded Niger states: Pledges FG Support
Vice President Senator Kasim Shettima, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has paid a visit to an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Gwada, Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, to show solidarity with the citizens affected by insecurity and flood disasters.
During the visit, which was aimed at assessing the plight of the victims and distributing relief materials, Senator Shettima reassured the people of Niger State of the federal government’s commitment to alleviating their suffering, announcing that each state will receive N3 billion to support the management of flood and security challenges.
Senator Shettima went on to explain that states with more severe disasters, such as Niger, Borno, Sokoto, Bayelsa and Jigawa, will receive additional support, as the government is collaborating with NEMA and the Niger State Government to provide adequate relief to the displaced citizens.
The Vice President emphasized the importance of the unity of all Nigerians during this time of crisis, urging well-meaning individuals to join the government in its efforts to provide comfort and assistance to the victims.
As the Vice President continued to engage with the displaced citizens, he highlighted the fact that this humanitarian crisis is not just a problem for Niger State, but for the entire nation.
Shettima expressed his belief that the resilience and faith of the Nigerian people will ultimately prevail, and that the government will do everything within its power to ensure that those affected by these tragedies are able to return to their homes and rebuild their lives.
The Vice President’s visit to the IDP camp, alongside key government ministers, was a powerful reminder of the federal government’s commitment to serving and protecting the citizens of Nigeria.
Beyond the immediate relief efforts, the Vice President also emphasized the importance of longer-term strategies to mitigate the impact of disasters and promote resilience among communities in Niger State and throughout the country.
He underscored the need for improved infrastructure, such as flood control systems, as well as stronger disaster response and preparedness mechanisms, to ensure that future emergencies can be managed in a more effective and timely manner.
As the nation faces these challenges, the Vice President called for collective action and collaboration between government, civil society, and the private sector to support the affected communities and build a more resilient and prosperous Nigeria.
