‘You lack understanding of Afrobeats’ – ID Cabasa Tells Buju
Veteran music producer ID Cabasa has disregarded the negative opinions about Afrobeats expressed by Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton.
In August, Banton had called Afrobeats a “shallow and unsubstantial music genre,” claiming that despite its widespread appeal, it ignores Africa’s hardships.
Speaking with reporters on Thursday at the late clergyman Denis Joseph Slattery’s memorial lecture in Lagos, Cabasa said that the Jamaican singer was ignorant of the vocabulary and aesthetic of Afrobeat.
He asserts: “Buju Banton is ignorant of the genre. Does he understand us? No. Nigerians are the world’s most sarcastic people, according to internet users. You will thus believe there isn’t a tale since you won’t get our sarcasm or the way we deliver our stories.
These folks now give the facts in an extremely straightforward manner. You believe you are deeper than them since you (Banton) sung and said so much more than they did.”
“So, these guys, they say stuff,” you say to yourself. You pay attention to Burna, also known as Buju (BNXN). You pay attention to Asake and Olamide. Are you going to tell me that Asake’s actions lack substance?
It doesn’t imply you should just criticize anything because you don’t understand it very well. I believe the reason he said what he did was because he was becoming so deeply in love with the beat.”
