Enugu State Unveils Advanced Security Drones and Patrol Assets to Strengthen Public Safety
In a significant step toward strengthening public safety, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially launched a suite of advanced security assets, including hi-tech drones, fully equipped patrol vehicles, motorcycles, and protective gear. The unveiling, held at Government House in Enugu, marks one of the most substantial security upgrades the state has undertaken in recent years.
The new assets — procured through the Enugu State Security Trust Fund (ESSTF) — include two state-of-the-art VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) surveillance drones, 10 Hilux 4×4 patrol trucks, 40 motorcycles, 400 bulletproof vests, and 400 bulletproof helmets. These additions are designed to boost the operational capacity of security agencies, improve response speed, and reinforce intelligence gathering across the state.
Governor Mbah, while inaugurating the equipment, commended the dedication of the ESSTF Board of Trustees, noting that their work aligns with his administration’s broader investment in modern security infrastructure. He highlighted initiatives such as the Command and Control Centre, a statewide network of AI-enabled security cameras, and over 150 Distress Response Squad vehicles equipped with intelligent surveillance tools.

According to the governor, these combined investments have already contributed to a dramatic drop in violent crime. “We can confidently say that violent crimes have been reduced by over 80 percent in Enugu State today,” he said. However, he emphasized that security remains an ongoing effort requiring constant vigilance. “You may score 90 percent in security, but one breach can undermine everything. That is why today’s reinforcement is essential.”
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborate closely with the Federal Government, noting that local and national strategies must work together to keep communities safe. Ensuring that Enugu remains the safest state in Nigeria, he said, demands both continued investment and proactive action.
Representing the ESSTF Chairman, Board Member Nath Udeh described the new assets as a critical reinforcement to the governor’s security agenda. He stressed that the improved safety in Enugu is already attracting growing numbers of visitors, businesses, and corporate retreats — a sign that public confidence is rising.
Providing technical insight, ESSTF Executive Secretary Engr. Chinedu Ani explained that the VTOL drones offer significant strategic advantages. Capable of covering a 100-kilometer range at speeds up to 120 km/h, the drones are equipped with multiple advanced cameras, including thermal, night-vision, and long-range zoom systems. The drones’ AI-equipped imaging tools allow analysts to track vehicles, individuals, and activities across diverse terrains, making them a powerful asset in crime prevention and suspect pursuit.
A Trustee of the Fund and Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onyekachi Onyia, emphasized the regional significance of securing Enugu State. He warned that any serious breach of security in Enugu could reverberate across the wider South East. “If terrorists are able to get through Enugu, the South East is finished,” he stated, justifying the heavy investment in defense systems.
The upgrade has generated a mixture of strong support, constructive criticism, and political commentary from the public. Many citizens praised the initiative as a much-needed modernization of state security architecture, while others questioned the quality of the drones or the transparency of procurement processes. Some commenters noted that only two drones may be insufficient, though others countered that their wide coverage and high capability make them effective tools.
Despite differing opinions, the launch signals a clear message from the Mbah administration: Enugu State intends to leverage modern technology to stay ahead of criminal threats and maintain its reputation as a secure environment for residents, investors, and visitors.
