Main Purpose of the Role
The Medical Doctor will provide high-quality outpatient and inpatient medical care in line with MSF protocols, medical ethics, and universal hygiene standards. The role focuses on improving patient health outcomes through accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, patient education, and teamwork within a multidisciplinary healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities
The Medical Doctor will conduct outpatient and inpatient consultations, diagnose illnesses, prescribe treatments, and ensure adherence to MSF medical protocols. The role includes daily follow-up of hospitalized and displaced patients, monitoring clinical progress, and making informed decisions on discharge, referral, or transfer in collaboration with colleagues.
You will ensure rational use and proper management of medicines and medical equipment, maintain strict hygiene and infection prevention standards, and participate in epidemiological data collection and analysis. The role also involves supervising and mentoring medical and paramedical staff, organizing duty rosters, and participating in emergency and on-call services when required.
In addition, the Medical Doctor will collaborate closely with nursing, mental health, sexual and reproductive health, protection, and health promotion teams to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. Emergency case management, accurate clinical documentation, confidentiality, and adherence to safety and IPC protocols are core aspects of the role. Where necessary, you will assist with or perform minor surgical interventions in collaboration with surgeons and make active use of telemedicine services for specialist input.
Requirements
Candidates must hold a Medical Doctor degree. A Diploma in Tropical Medicine is an added advantage. A minimum of two years’ clinical experience is required, which may include experience gained during medical training. Experience in tropical medicine, public health, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, TB, general practice, or minor surgery is desirable.
Fluency in the mission language is essential, while Hausa or other local languages are an advantage. Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet use, is desirable. Strong competencies in teamwork, flexibility, commitment, results orientation, and people management are required.
Remuneration
Salary and benefits are based on the MSF National Staff Salary Scale.
