Two Critically Injured in Early-Morning Crash on Oshodi–Oke Axis as Speeding Bus Slams Into Truck
Two passengers sustained critical injuries in the early hours of the day following a serious road traffic accident involving a commercial bus along the Heritage Garden stretch of the Oshodi–Oke axis in Lagos State. The incident, which occurred during a period of relatively light traffic, has once again drawn attention to the persistent dangers of speeding on major Lagos road corridors.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the accident in an official statement, identifying the vehicle involved as a red commercial Tata long bus with registration number MUS 507 XX. According to traffic officials, preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speeding by the bus driver caused the vehicle to lose control and crash into a moving truck along the busy route.
Eyewitness accounts and early findings suggest that the impact was severe, leaving the front section of the bus significantly damaged. The collision reportedly trapped two passengers inside the bus, both of whom sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. LASTMA officials disclosed that the truck involved in the accident did not suffer visible damage and was able to drive away from the scene shortly after the collision, complicating immediate efforts to identify and apprehend the truck driver.
Emergency responders were alerted promptly after the crash, and LASTMA officers arrived at the scene to secure the area and begin rescue operations. Due to the extent of damage to the bus, the rescue effort required careful coordination to safely extract the injured passengers without worsening their condition.

According to LASTMA, the two victims were found trapped inside the wreckage and in critical condition. Officers successfully rescued them and immediately activated emergency response protocols. The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) was contacted, and medical personnel arrived to administer first aid at the scene before transporting the injured passengers to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Traffic officials said the swift response helped prevent additional injuries and minimized the risk of secondary accidents along the corridor, which is known for heavy vehicular movement, particularly during peak hours. To further ensure public safety and restore normal traffic flow, LASTMA officers apprehended the bus driver and took him in for questioning as part of ongoing investigations into the incident.
The wrecked bus was subsequently removed from the road to ease congestion and prevent further disruption to traffic along the Oshodi–Oke axis. Authorities noted that the prompt clearance of the vehicle was necessary to avoid a buildup of traffic, which could have created additional hazards for motorists using the route.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy for the injured passengers and wished them a speedy and full recovery. He described the crash as avoidable, stressing that excessive speeding remains one of the leading causes of road accidents in Lagos State.
Bakare-Oki warned commercial drivers and other road users against reckless driving, noting that the pressure to meet daily targets or beat traffic should never come at the expense of human lives. He emphasized that traffic laws are designed to protect both drivers and passengers, and urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and road safety regulations.
He further reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws across the state, particularly on major highways and accident-prone corridors such as Oshodi–Oke. According to him, the agency will continue to intensify monitoring and enforcement efforts to discourage dangerous driving behaviors, including speeding, improper overtaking, and disregard for traffic signals.
The incident has sparked reactions from members of the public, many of whom expressed concern over the frequency of bus-related accidents in Lagos. Road safety advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement, improved driver training, and routine vehicle inspections to reduce the number of avoidable crashes on Lagos roads.
As investigations continue, authorities have urged commercial drivers to exercise patience and caution, especially during early morning hours when empty roads can tempt motorists to drive at dangerous speeds. They also appealed to passengers to speak up when drivers engage in reckless behavior, reminding the public that road safety is a shared responsibility.
