Abia Community Imposes Total Ban on Hard Drugs, Cultism, and Criminal Activities in Sweeping Security Reforms
The people of Ebem Ohafia in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State have introduced a wide-ranging set of security reforms designed to curb criminal activities, strengthen community safety, and preserve long-standing social values. The resolutions, which include a total ban on hard drugs, cultism, gun-related violence, and other forms of criminality, took immediate effect on Monday, January 13, 2026.
The decision followed extensive consultations involving the Ebem Ohafia youths, the Central Executive Council of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), and the Ebem Council of Chiefs and Elders. Community leaders said the measures were necessitated by growing concerns over insecurity and the need for collective action to protect lives and property within the area.
Under the new directives, the sale, use, and trafficking of hard drugs and other illicit substances are strictly prohibited throughout Ebem Ohafia. Community authorities warned that offenders will face severe disciplinary actions, including heavy fines and additional sanctions, regardless of their social standing or affiliations. Leaders stressed that the policy would be enforced without favoritism as part of a broader effort to deter drug abuse and its associated social consequences.
The community also issued a strong warning against cult-related activities, which it described as a serious threat to peace and development. Individuals currently involved in cultism were given a final ultimatum to renounce such activities. Failure to comply, the community said, would result in stiff sanctions and possible prosecution in line with existing laws.

In another significant move, Ebem Ohafia resolved to prevent the community from becoming a safe haven for criminal elements fleeing justice elsewhere. Persons who have committed crimes in other communities and relocated to Ebem Ohafia as a hideout have been ordered to leave immediately. Any indigene found harboring or providing accommodation for such individuals will be held responsible and face community-imposed penalties.
The reforms also outlaw the possession, brandishing, or discharge of firearms, as well as violent confrontations of any kind. Offenders, according to the resolutions, will be handed over to security agencies and subjected to additional community sanctions. The community further resolved that Ndi Ikwu—local administrative units—will be held accountable for defaulters within their jurisdictions. Sanctions may include suspension from hosting social ceremonies or participating in communal activities.
Beyond security concerns, the measures extend to commercial conduct and public order. Traders operating along the Ebem Police Station/Court Road and within the Ebem Ohafia Daily Market were warned against obstructing gutters, walkways, and designated free zones. Goods found violating these directives, the community said, will be impounded without prior notice as part of efforts to maintain cleanliness and accessibility.
Speaking on behalf of the community, the Publicity Secretary of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union, Mr. Ifeanyi Okali, said the reforms reflect a collective determination to safeguard the community’s future. He urged residents and visitors alike to comply fully with the new rules, emphasizing that enforcement would be firm and uncompromising.
“These measures are aimed at protecting lives, property, and the core values that define Ebem Ohafia as a people,” Okali said, adding that community cooperation would be critical to the success of the initiative.
The announcement has generated varied reactions among members of the public, with some welcoming the move as long overdue, while others expressed skepticism about enforcement and sustainability. Nonetheless, community leaders insist that the reforms mark a decisive step toward restoring peace, improving social discipline, and laying the foundation for sustainable development.
As enforcement begins, the Ebem Ohafia community has reiterated its commitment to peace, security, and responsible citizenship, calling on all stakeholders to support the new security framework in the collective interest of a safer and more orderly society.
