Nigeria Issues Travel Advisory as Israel-US and Iran Conflict Escalates in Gulf Region
The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued an urgent travel advisory to its citizens residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran and several Gulf states amid rising military tensions involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.
The advisory was announced in a statement signed by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to the statement, the government is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East, particularly in light of reported military operations by Israel and the United States against Iranian targets, as well as retaliatory strikes by Iran on locations within certain Gulf countries.
The escalating hostilities have raised concerns about broader regional instability, prompting Nigerian authorities to warn citizens in affected areas to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety.
In its guidance, the Ministry urged Nigerians to avoid strategic locations such as military bases, government facilities, and other sensitive installations that could become flashpoints in the event of further escalation. Citizens were also advised to limit non-essential travel and movement within host countries until the security situation stabilises.
Additionally, Nigerians were cautioned against participating in or being present at large gatherings and public demonstrations, which could pose heightened security risks during periods of political and military tension. The Ministry emphasised the importance of complying strictly with directives issued by local authorities and cooperating with law enforcement agencies to ensure personal safety.

The Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, alongside diplomatic missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, have been placed on high alert. These embassies are expected to maintain open lines of communication with Nigerian nationals and provide consular assistance where necessary.
Government officials reiterated that the safety and well-being of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority. The Ministry assured citizens that it would continue to assess developments in the region and provide timely updates as the situation evolves.
The advisory comes against the backdrop of intensified hostilities between the United States and Iran. The United States Central Command recently confirmed casualties among American troops following Iranian strikes in the Gulf, further heightening fears of a protracted confrontation. The military escalation has drawn global attention, with concerns that the conflict could expand beyond its current scope.
In its statement, the Nigerian government also called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and return to dialogue. It stressed the need for de-escalation in the interest of regional and global peace, warning that continued hostilities could destabilise not only the Middle East but also international security and economic stability.
The Gulf region hosts a significant number of Nigerian expatriates, many of whom work in sectors such as construction, oil and gas, domestic services, and hospitality. Given the concentration of Nigerians in countries like the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, the advisory underscores the government’s recognition of the potential risks posed by a widening conflict.
While the government has not announced evacuation plans, officials indicated that embassies are prepared to respond should the situation deteriorate further. For now, the focus remains on precautionary measures and ensuring that Nigerian citizens remain informed and alert.
Observers note that travel advisories are standard diplomatic tools used by governments to alert citizens to evolving security threats abroad. As tensions persist in the Middle East, Nigeria joins other nations in urging caution and prioritising the protection of its nationals overseas.
The Ministry concluded by reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding Nigerians wherever they reside and encouraged citizens in the region to stay connected with their respective embassies for verified information and assistance.
