Accreditation: UNICAL VC apologises to affected students, blames officials

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UniCal), Professor Florence Obi, has blamed some of the university’s officials, including the provost, dean, and admission officers, for admitting more students above the quota into its dentistry programme.

Dentistry students at the university recently protested the programme’s accreditation issues, which threatens their admission statuses.

While speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, The Morning Brief, the VC apologised to the affected students and pledged to resolve the issue.

“I want to really appeal to the students and to parents because I have read somewhere that students are getting depressed, and some of them are threatening suicide,” she said.

“I want to really appeal to my students to hold it, to be calm, that on my honour, we will see how, together, with MDCN, we can resolve the problem.”

The MDCN had allocated a quota of 10 slots to the university for the programme, but 60 students were admitted.

She indicted some officials of the university, including the provost, dean, and admission officers, for overadmission. She added that the university management will issue queries to the officials.

“We are going to invoke the university’s internal mechanism to handle that, and we have to query some people. Definitely, there will be consequences,” she added.
