FG Opens Applications for 2026 PTDF Overseas Scholarships for Nigerian Postgraduates
The Federal Government has officially opened applications for the 2026 edition of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship Scheme, providing Nigerian postgraduate students with opportunities to undertake advanced studies in key oil and gas–related disciplines abroad.
The announcement was confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) by the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, who disclosed that the application process for the highly sought-after scholarship programme has commenced. According to the statement, the scheme is aimed at supporting qualified Nigerian graduates seeking to pursue Master’s and Doctorate degrees in carefully selected institutions overseas.
“FG has announced the commencement of applications for the 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) overseas scholarships,” the post read.
The PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme is targeted at MSc and PhD candidates whose fields of study are relevant to Nigeria’s oil, gas, and broader energy sector. The programme is part of the Federal Government’s long-term strategy to build indigenous technical capacity, reduce reliance on expatriate expertise, and strengthen the country’s energy industry through advanced education and research.
Successful applicants will enjoy a comprehensive scholarship package designed to cover the full cost of study abroad. Benefits include full tuition fees paid directly to host institutions, return flight tickets, accommodation, monthly living allowances, health insurance, and bench fees where applicable. The fund noted that these provisions are intended to allow scholars to focus fully on their academic and research pursuits without financial distractions.

According to PTDF, beneficiaries of the overseas scholarship programme will gain access to world-class training, cutting-edge research facilities, and exposure to global best practices in the energy sector. The fund stated that this international exposure is expected to translate into improved technical competence and innovation upon the scholars’ return to Nigeria.
In a further breakdown of the programme, PTDF disclosed that PhD candidates admitted into universities in the United Kingdom will participate in a split-site arrangement. Under this structure, scholars will conduct part of their research at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies (CPES) in Kaduna, while also working with partner institutions abroad. These partner universities include Robert Gordon University, the University of Strathclyde, and the University of Portsmouth. The arrangement is designed to strengthen local research capacity while maintaining strong international academic collaboration.
The fund emphasised that the scholarship scheme is highly competitive, with applicants subjected to a rigorous selection process. Candidates will be assessed based on academic excellence, the quality and relevance of their research proposals, professional memberships, and the alignment of their chosen fields with Nigeria’s strategic oil and gas development priorities.
For MSc applicants, PTDF stated that candidates must possess a minimum of a Second Class Lower (2:2) degree from a recognised institution. In addition, applicants must have completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme and present evidence of their discharge or exemption.
PhD applicants, on the other hand, are required to submit a comprehensive research proposal that demonstrates originality, feasibility, and relevance to the fund’s objectives. The proposal must clearly show how the intended research will contribute to the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s energy sector.
Interested and qualified candidates are advised to submit their applications online through the official PTDF scholarship portal. The fund stressed that only applications completed through the designated platform will be considered, and applicants are encouraged to carefully review the guidelines before submission to avoid disqualification.
The deadline for the submission of applications has been set for February 27, 2026.
The announcement has generated mixed reactions on social media, with some users welcoming the opportunity for advanced education and professional development, while others expressed concerns based on past experiences of government-sponsored overseas scholarship programmes. Despite the differing opinions, PTDF has reiterated its commitment to transparency, merit-based selection, and effective management of the scheme.
The fund encouraged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity, noting that the programme remains a critical component of national efforts to develop skilled manpower and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global energy landscape.
