Ogun Police Clarify Investigation Into TikToker Mirabel’s Alleged Assault Claim, Warn Against False Reporting
The Ogun State Police Command has addressed public concerns surrounding an alleged sexual assault case involving a Nigerian TikToker known as Mirabel (@mirab351), stating that legal consequences will apply depending on the outcome of investigations.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, made the clarification during an interview with Channels Television. According to him, the police remain committed to due process and will allow evidence to determine the direction of prosecution.
“In general, if she’s telling the truth, the perpetrator will be arrested and charged to court appropriately,” Babaseyi stated. “If it is otherwise, as you know, the law goes against giving false information, and that can make anyone who gives false information culpable.”
The police spokesperson also dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that the TikToker had been arrested. He described such claims as inaccurate, emphasizing that she voluntarily reported the case and is cooperating with investigators.
“What we are trying to dispel is that there’s an allegation online that the police arrested her. She was not arrested by the police. She had a case and reported at the police station and we are investigating it, not as people claim that she was arrested as seen on social media,” he said.
The case gained national attention after Mirabel posted a viral video alleging that an unidentified man forced his way into her apartment, restrained her, and threatened her. The alleged incident was said to have occurred on February 15. The video sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians calling for swift justice and protection for survivors of sexual violence.
Police authorities disclosed that following the emergence of the allegations online, the Commissioner of Police directed the Divisional Police Officer of the Ibafo Division to make immediate contact with the complainant. She subsequently reported at the Ibafo Police Station, where officers obtained preliminary statements.
Investigators later determined that the alleged incident fell within the jurisdiction of Ogijo. The complainant was escorted to a medical facility for examination and urgent care before the case was transferred to the Ogijo Police Station for further documentation and investigation.
According to the Command, the complainant was later referred for extended medical attention due to what officials described as her fragile medical and emotional condition. Authorities also assured the public that steps were being taken to ensure her safety while the investigation continues.
The development has triggered intense public debate, particularly regarding accountability in cases of sexual assault and the legal implications of false reporting. Some commentators have stressed the importance of taking all allegations seriously to protect genuine victims, while others have emphasized that false accusations, if proven, can damage reputations and undermine public trust in legitimate cases.
Legal experts note that Nigerian law criminalizes the act of knowingly providing false information to law enforcement agencies. At the same time, advocacy groups maintain that survivors of sexual violence must not be discouraged from reporting incidents due to fear of public backlash.
As investigations remain ongoing, the police have urged members of the public to avoid speculation and allow due process to run its course. Authorities reiterated that conclusions will be based strictly on evidence gathered during the inquiry.
