Super Falcons star Esther Okoronkwo once again proved her class on Monday night, scoring a sensational first-half hat-trick that powered AFC Toronto into the final of the inaugural Northern Super League (NSL) in Canada. The 28-year-old forward was in blistering form as Toronto dismantled Montreal Roses 4–1 in a snow-covered semifinal clash at York Lions Stadium.
The victory sealed a 6–1 aggregate win for the regular-season champions, setting up a mouthwatering final against Vancouver Rise. The match had been postponed from Sunday due to heavy snowfall in the Toronto area, but Okoronkwo ensured the cold conditions didn’t cool her finishing instincts.
She opened the scoring as early as the 7th minute, capitalizing on a slick assist from teammate Kaylee Hunter. Her second came in the 20th minute — a thunderous strike from outside the box that left the Montreal goalkeeper with no chance. Just six minutes later, she completed her hat-trick with a composed finish, effectively ending the contest before halftime.
Lauren Rowe added a fourth for Toronto in the 83rd minute, while Tanya Boychuk grabbed a consolation for Montreal in the 74th.

Okoronkwo’s stellar display came as no surprise to fans who have followed her throughout the NSL season. In 1,486 minutes of regular-season action, she recorded eight goals and eight assists — ranking among the league’s most productive attackers. She was also named Nigeria’s “Baller of the Week” in September after contributing to three goals in Toronto’s 7–0 demolition of Vancouver Rise.
“It was a complete team effort,” Toronto coach Marko Milanović said after the match. “The work up top from Kaylee Hunter was incredible, and she was the one who set up that first goal. As for Esther, we know what she’s capable of. She’s a big-time player who delivers in big moments — we saw it at the Africa Cup of Nations and now again in this semifinal.”
During Nigeria’s run to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semifinals, Okoronkwo was instrumental, scoring three goals and showcasing her trademark pace and power. Toronto, who won the first leg 2–0 on November 1 at Stade Boréale in Montreal, will now face Vancouver Rise in the NSL Final at BMO Field on Saturday. Vancouver advanced after edging Ottawa 5–4 on penalties following a dramatic 3–3 aggregate result.
Beyond her club heroics, Okoronkwo’s reputation continues to grow internationally. She was the league’s top assist provider and the fourth-highest goal scorer during the regular season — achievements that have earned her a nomination for the prestigious CAF African Women’s Player of the Year award.
