Tinubu Urges Judiciary to Reject Corruption at 2025 Judges’ Conference
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued one of his strongest public statements on judicial integrity, urging judges across Nigeria to uphold the sanctity of justice and resist all forms of corruption or undue influence. The message was delivered on Monday at the 2025 All Nigerian Judges’ Conference of the Superior Courts, held in Abuja. The conference gathered judges, court administrators, senior legal practitioners, and other stakeholders from across the country.
Tinubu underscored that the judiciary serves as the backbone of the nation’s democracy and the last avenue of hope for citizens seeking fairness and protection under the law. According to him, when the judiciary is compromised, every other institution of governance collapses under the weight of injustice. He stressed that judicial officers must embody discipline, transparency, and ethical conduct both within and outside the courtroom.
The President warned that corruption in the judiciary has consequences far more damaging than corrupt practices in other sectors because it erodes trust and destroys the credibility of legal institutions. Once citizens begin to doubt the impartiality of the courts, Tinubu said, national stability becomes fragile. He urged judges to ensure that influence, money, political power, or personal relationships never determine the outcome of any case.

Tinubu also expressed concern about the alarming backlog of cases in Nigerian courts. He noted that thousands of matters remain unresolved for years, leaving citizens frustrated and contributing to public distrust in the justice system. According to him, justice delayed is justice denied, and prolonged litigation weakens the country’s democratic fabric. He emphasized that timely, fair, and transparent rulings are essential for sustaining national confidence.
To address these long-standing problems, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in judicial reforms. He pledged continued support for judicial capacity-building programs, improved welfare for judicial officers, and modernization of court infrastructure through institutions such as the National Judicial Institute. These efforts, he said, are meant to empower judges with updated tools and knowledge to perform effectively.
A key part of his address focused on digitisation. Tinubu advocated for digital case management systems, electronic filing, and integrated judicial databases to track cases efficiently. He insisted that the future of judicial administration lies in technology-driven systems that reduce delays, minimize corruption opportunities, and enhance transparency. Modernizing the courts, he said, is not optional but necessary for a reliable justice system.
The President further emphasized that reforming the judiciary is not the sole responsibility of the National Judicial Council. Instead, he said every judicial officer must commit to preserving the institution’s honour. Tinubu noted that an independent and corruption-free judiciary is crucial to protecting citizens’ rights and ensuring democratic stability.
Before concluding, he assured the judges that his administration will prioritize the provision of modern courtrooms, state-of-the-art digitised systems, research support, and enhanced administrative structures. These, he said, are not ceremonial promises but fundamental necessities for strengthening Nigeria’s justice architecture.
Tinubu ended his address by stating that every courageous and fair judicial ruling strengthens Nigeria’s democracy. He expressed hope that the 2025 conference would yield actionable resolutions capable of restoring public trust and reinforcing the judiciary as a guardian of justice. He reminded the judges that justice must never be for sale at any level, in any form, or under any circumstance, emphasizing once again that the integrity of the judiciary remains central to the nation’s survival.
