Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Religious Freedom and Security in Christmas Message
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has once again assured Nigerians of his unwavering commitment to religious freedom, national unity, and the security of citizens across the country, regardless of their faith, ethnicity, or background. The president made this known in his Christmas message to the nation, released as Christians in Nigeria and around the world marked the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
In the goodwill message, President Tinubu described Christmas as a season that calls for reflection on love, sacrifice, peace, and goodwill to humanity. He urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the teachings and example of Jesus Christ, whom he referred to as the Prince of Peace, noting that the values of compassion, tolerance, and service to others remain essential for national cohesion.
The president stressed that freedom of religion is a fundamental right guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, adding that his administration remains firmly committed to protecting this right. According to him, no Nigerian should be subjected to violence, discrimination, or intimidation for professing or practising their faith.
“No one, regardless of ethnicity or belief, should be made to suffer for professing and practising his faith,” Tinubu stated. “The love for God and love for humanity is at the heart of all the great faiths. These shared values must continue to bind us together as one indivisible and resilient people of our blessed country.”
President Tinubu acknowledged ongoing concerns about religious intolerance and insecurity in parts of the country but said his government has continued to engage with leaders of the major faiths to address these challenges. He disclosed that throughout the year, he held discussions with prominent Christian and Muslim leaders aimed at strengthening mutual understanding and cooperation between religious institutions and the government.

According to the president, these engagements would be expanded and deepened to help prevent conflict, address grievances early, and promote peaceful coexistence among Nigerians of different beliefs. He emphasised that religious leaders have a vital role to play in fostering peace and discouraging extremism and violence in their communities.
Reflecting on his time in office since assuming the presidency in 2023, Tinubu reiterated that safeguarding national security, unity, and stability remains a core priority of his administration. He said the government would continue to deploy all lawful means to protect lives and property across the country.
“That commitment remains steadfast under God and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said. “All Nigerians have the right to live, worship, and pursue their aspirations in safety and dignity.”
The president also paid tribute to Christians in Nigeria, acknowledging their contributions to national development, social welfare, and community service. He noted that Christian teachings and institutions have played a significant role in caring for the vulnerable, promoting education, and supporting peace-building efforts across the country.
He commended individuals and organisations who, inspired by the message of the Gospel, have continued to work for harmony, tolerance, and compassion, often in difficult circumstances. According to him, such efforts reflect the true spirit of Christmas and should be encouraged across all faiths.
President Tinubu also addressed the seasonal movement of people across the country, urging Nigerians travelling during the holiday period to exercise patience, obey traffic rules, and maintain discipline on the roads. He wished travellers safe journeys and safe returns to their destinations.
Concluding his message, the president expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, stating that with faith, unity, and collective effort, the country would continue on the path of progress. He called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to building a nation that future generations would be proud of.
“With confidence in divine providence and our collective strength, we will continue the work of building a greater Nigeria,” Tinubu said, wishing Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
