Presidency Explains Tinubu’s Brief Loss of Balance During Official Visit to Turkey
The Presidency has offered clarification on an incident involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his official visit to Turkey, following widespread public discussion after a video showed the Nigerian leader briefly losing his balance in Ankara.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, explained that the incident occurred when President Tinubu stepped on a metal object while walking, causing a momentary loss of balance. According to him, the situation was neither serious nor indicative of any underlying health concerns.
Onanuga addressed inquiries from journalists on Tuesday after footage of the incident circulated widely on social media platforms. The video showed President Tinubu walking alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during an official reception when he appeared to miss his step and go down briefly.
The visit formed part of President Tinubu’s diplomatic engagements in Turkey, where he was received with a ceremonial parade. Moments before the incident, the Nigerian leader had inspected a guard of honour as part of the official welcome.

“The President stepped on a metal on the floor, which made him lose his balance,” Onanuga said. “This is not a big deal, except for those who want to make mischief out of a fleeting incident. It was a mere stumble, thank God, not a fall.”
