Anthony Joshua Discharged From Hospital After Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Accident
Former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has been discharged from hospital following treatment for injuries sustained in a tragic road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident, which occurred earlier in the week, resulted in the death of two members of his inner circle and has continued to draw widespread public attention and sympathy.
The confirmation of Joshua’s discharge was made on Wednesday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, who disclosed that the boxer had been certified medically fit to continue his recovery outside the hospital environment. According to Omotoso, Joshua had been receiving medical care at Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, after being rushed there shortly following the accident.
“Anthony Joshua has been deemed clinically fit to recuperate from home and was discharged earlier today,” Omotoso said in a statement. He added that the boxer’s condition had remained stable throughout his stay at the medical facility and that his injuries were described as minor.
The accident occurred on Monday when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and members of his team collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest and most accident-prone highways. The crash claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele, his longtime personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach. Both men were reported to have died at the scene or shortly after the collision due to the severity of their injuries.

Joshua survived the crash and was immediately evacuated to Lagos for medical attention. His discharge from hospital came amid conflicting reports circulating on social media regarding his condition and location, including claims that he had been flown out of the country for treatment. Official sources, however, confirmed that he remained in Lagos throughout his medical care.
Following his discharge, Omotoso revealed that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos where the remains of his late associates are being kept. The visit was described as a private moment for the boxer to pay his final respects and mourn the loss of two individuals who played significant roles in his professional career and personal life.
The Lagos State Government, alongside the Ogun State Government, expressed appreciation for the outpouring of concern and goodwill messages from Nigerians and fans around the world. Omotoso noted that Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State acknowledged the public’s show of compassion following what he described as a “very sad and unfortunate incident.”
Meanwhile, investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, with differing accounts emerging from relevant authorities. The Ogun State Police Command stated on Tuesday that a burst tyre was responsible for the crash. However, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in its preliminary findings, attributed the accident to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety and traffic violations on major highways across the country.
Although Joshua was born in England, he maintains strong ties to Nigeria and frequently visits his ancestral home in Sagamu, Ogun State. He was last in the country in 2024, where he interacted with several Nigerian celebrities and presented President Bola Tinubu with a signed boxing glove during a courtesy visit.
Joshua’s most recent trip to Nigeria followed an exhibition heavyweight bout in Miami, United States, where he knocked out social media personality Jake Paul at the Kaseya Centre. The accident has since cast a shadow over what had been a celebratory period for the boxer, turning public focus toward road safety, emergency response, and the dangers associated with high-speed travel.
As tributes continue to pour in for the deceased members of his team, Joshua is expected to remain out of the public eye while he recovers physically and emotionally from the incident.
