Finance Ministry Confirms Release of Super Eagles’ AFCON Bonuses Amid Payment Concerns
The Federal Government has confirmed the release of all group-stage bonuses due to members of the Super Eagles currently competing at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), easing concerns that payment delays could disrupt the team’s preparations ahead of their quarter-final match.
The confirmation was made on Thursday by the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, following widespread reports that players were considering boycotting training sessions and might refuse to travel to Marrakesh for their crucial knockout fixture. The reports triggered public concern and renewed scrutiny of how athletes’ welfare is handled during major international competitions.
In a statement shared via her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Uzoka-Anite disclosed that the issue had been resolved through coordinated efforts between the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). According to her, all bonuses earned by the players during the group stage of the tournament have now been fully processed and cleared.
“The Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria have successfully streamlined processes to ensure faster, more predictable disbursements aligned with international best practice,” the minister stated. She added that regulatory approvals required for the release of the funds had been completed, allowing the payments to proceed without further delay.
Uzoka-Anite explained that special measures were introduced to accommodate the players’ preference to receive their bonuses in foreign currency. She said a fast-track conversion process was implemented to ensure that naira-denominated funds were converted promptly and transferred into the players’ domiciliary accounts.

“All group-stage bonuses were fully released and have now cleared the necessary regulatory stages,” she said. “The final transfers to domiciliary accounts are currently in flight. Players can expect these funds to reflect starting today or tomorrow.”
The minister stressed that the government remains committed to safeguarding the welfare and morale of the national team, particularly as they progress into the more demanding stages of the tournament. She noted that resolving off-field issues was essential to ensuring that players remain focused on performance and results on the pitch.
“Our focus remains entirely on supporting the team’s welfare so they can maintain their incredible momentum in the knockout rounds,” Uzoka-Anite said, adding that the administration’s priority is to prevent administrative distractions from undermining Nigeria’s AFCON campaign.
