Henry Seriake Dickson Defects from PDP to Newly Formed Nigeria Democratic Congress
Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West Senatorial District, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the newly established Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a political platform he founded and currently leads.
The announcement was made during a plenary session of the Nigerian Senate, where Dickson formally notified lawmakers of his decision to leave the PDP and align himself with the emerging political party.
Dickson’s move comes amid growing conversations about internal tensions within the PDP and broader discussions about the future of opposition politics in Nigeria. By announcing his defection on the Senate floor, the former governor of Bayelsa State signaled a major shift in his political direction and reaffirmed his commitment to building a new national platform.
In a statement released shortly after the announcement, Dickson described the early momentum of the NDC as remarkable. According to him, the party has already recorded significant growth nationwide despite being barely two weeks old.
He expressed appreciation to Nigerians who have shown support for the party since its registration.
“I wish to commend Nigerians for their solidarity, support, and the confidence reposed in us,” Dickson said while addressing supporters and party members.
He also praised officials at both the state and national levels of the party for their efforts in building the new organization and urged them to remain committed to strengthening democratic competition in Nigeria.
Dickson emphasized that the party is focused on promoting a vibrant multiparty democracy and offering Nigerians an alternative political platform beyond the existing major parties.

The senator explained that although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) requires political parties to maintain organizational structures, the law does not impose a specific minimum number of registered members. However, he said the NDC’s ongoing membership drive has already surpassed expectations.
According to Dickson, the party is actively welcoming individuals from various backgrounds, including professionals, politicians, and citizens dissatisfied with the current political system.
He extended an open invitation to Nigerians who may feel politically displaced or disillusioned with their existing political affiliations.
Dickson also encouraged individuals who were previously associated with unregistered political movements to consider joining the new party, emphasizing that the NDC aims to build a credible and inclusive political organization.
“The NDC is for us all,” he said, reiterating that the party’s goal is to create a viable platform capable of strengthening democratic participation.

Before joining the Senate, Dickson served as governor of Bayelsa State from 2012 to 2020, a period during which he remained a prominent figure within the PDP.
With his defection now official, Dickson becomes the first and currently the only serving senator representing the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the National Assembly.
