Sustained Military Operations Producing Measurable Security Gains Nationwide, Tinubu Says
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that continuous military operations targeting terrorist groups and criminal networks are producing tangible security gains across different parts of the country. According to the president, consistent pressure on armed groups, improved inter-agency coordination, and enhanced international cooperation have contributed to restoring relative calm in communities that were previously plagued by fear and violence.
Tinubu made the remarks in Abuja on Tuesday during the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day gala and award night. He was represented at the event by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris. The annual ceremony is organised to honour fallen heroes, recognise serving and retired military personnel, and reflect on the role of the armed forces in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty.
In his address, Tinubu praised the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for what he described as improved safety conditions in several parts of the country. He noted that areas once dominated by insecurity and criminal activity are now experiencing relative peace due to sustained operational efforts and better collaboration among security institutions.
The president also highlighted the importance of partnerships beyond Nigeria’s borders, saying cooperation with regional and international allies has played a role in strengthening intelligence sharing, improving operational effectiveness, and rebuilding public confidence in affected communities.

Tinubu stressed that the sacrifices of both fallen and serving military personnel remain central to Nigeria’s peace, unity, and democratic stability. He said the nation’s security progress has been built on the courage, dedication, and resilience of men and women in uniform, many of whom have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
According to him, national remembrance should not be limited to ceremonial events. “Remembrance is a lasting national duty owed to those who laid down their lives in defence of the nation,” Tinubu said, adding that their sacrifices should continue to inspire unity, patriotism, and commitment to national service.
He also acknowledged the critical role played by military families, thanking spouses, children, and relatives of service members for their support and resilience. Tinubu said the emotional and social sacrifices made by military families are an often-overlooked aspect of national defence, noting that their strength contributes significantly to the morale and effectiveness of troops.
As part of efforts to deepen public engagement and appreciation for the armed forces, the president announced two new initiatives. The first is the “Thank-a-Soldier Electronic Wall,” a digital platform that will allow Nigerians to post messages of appreciation to serving and retired military personnel. The second is the “My Nigerian Hero Campaign,” a year-long social media initiative designed to highlight stories of bravery, sacrifice, and service by members of the armed forces.
Reaffirming his administration’s position, Tinubu said national security remains a top priority. He pledged continued investment in modern equipment, enhanced training programmes, and improved welfare packages for military personnel. The president also urged members of the armed forces to remain disciplined, united, and loyal to the constitution in the discharge of their duties.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, described the courage and sacrifices of Nigerian military personnel as fundamental to the country’s freedom and sovereignty. He said the awards presented at the gala reflected stories of bravery, professionalism, and quiet sacrifice that often go unnoticed by the public.
The ceremony featured awards for serving and retired officers who have made significant contributions to national security. Among those recognised were the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu; former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai; and former army spokesperson, Sani Usman.
The president’s remarks come amid ongoing national conversations about security challenges, military strategy, and the broader impact of counterterrorism operations. While the government maintains that progress is being made, public reactions continue to reflect a mix of optimism, concern, and calls for greater accountability and transparency in the fight against insecurity.
