“US-Bound” Stowaway Arrested at Ilorin Airport After Attempt to Hide in Aircraft Undercarriage
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed the arrest of a suspected stowaway, identified as Segun Martins, at the Gen. Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin, Kwara State. The incident occurred on Wednesday at approximately 3:02 p.m., raising fresh concerns about airport security breaches and the rising desperation among some citizens seeking to leave the country through unsafe and illegal means.
According to a statement issued by Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, Martins unlawfully accessed the airside of the airport while an Overland Airways aircraft was preparing for taxi. The suspect allegedly made his way toward the aircraft and attempted to conceal himself in the undercarriage section between the tyres, hoping to remain hidden until takeoff.
Ground personnel noticed the unusual movement near the aircraft and quickly intercepted the suspect before he could lodge himself inside the dangerous compartment. He was immediately detained by airport security officials and handed over to the Airport Police Division for further interrogation and investigation.
During preliminary questioning, Martins reportedly told investigators that he believed the aircraft was heading to the United States. His intention, according to the NCAA statement, was to leave the country by hiding inside the aircraft’s wheel compartment—a notoriously deadly method of attempted travel. The suspect appeared to be unaware of the extreme dangers associated with stowing away in such conditions.
