Adeleke Yet to Officially Notify PDP of Resignation, Says Turaki
The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki, has stated that the party has not received any official notification confirming the resignation of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke from the PDP. Turaki made this known on Tuesday while addressing journalists shortly after the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held in Abuja.
According to him, although a resignation letter attributed to Governor Adeleke has been widely circulated online, the party cannot act on media reports or assumptions. He stressed that no formal communication—either from the governor or his authorised representatives—has reached the party’s national secretariat. Until that happens, Adeleke remains a member and, more importantly, an aspirant in the ongoing governorship primary process in Osun.
Turaki explained that Adeleke is still listed among the contestants seeking the PDP ticket, noting that the party operates strictly based on documented procedures, not speculation. “Even if what we saw online turns out to be true, Governor Adeleke—as a Nigerian—has the constitutional right to associate with any political party. He can choose to join or leave at will. But resignation must follow proper communication,” he stressed.

Speaking further, Turaki emphasised that the strength of the PDP does not lie in individual politicians but in the collective will of its members nationwide. He cited past situations where governors defected to other parties but large portions of their supporters did not follow, arguing that PDP’s grassroots structure remains intact across many states. He expressed confidence that the party’s influence will be evident when election season resumes.
Turaki also addressed internal party processes, confirming that the NWC has reviewed and approved the ad-hoc delegate congresses recently conducted in Osun. He noted that the governorship primary in the state was progressing peacefully and that Adeleke’s name remained on the official list of aspirants. “As we speak, the primaries are ongoing, and Governor Adeleke is one of the aspirants,” he said.
Beyond Osun, Turaki revealed that the NWC also assessed preparations for the upcoming local government elections in Anambra State. He commended the state chapter for its readiness and expressed optimism that the PDP would perform strongly in the polls.
Regarding former PDP governors nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for non-career ambassadorial appointments, Turaki said the party had not been formally notified by any of them. He added that if the nominees seek the party’s guidance or permission, the PDP would evaluate the matter on its merits.
Turaki also used the briefing to comment on the worsening security situation in the country. He urged the Federal Government to urgently review Nigeria’s security architecture, arguing that state governors—despite being called chief security officers—lack operational control over security agencies. He insisted that such contradictions in the current structure must be addressed if citizens are to feel safe.
Meanwhile, in Osun State, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, stated on Tuesday that Governor Adeleke will formally join a new political party before December 13, following his reported resignation from the PDP—suggesting that a major political shift in the state may be imminent.
The uncertainty surrounding Adeleke’s status continues to generate reactions, both within the party and among the public, as political realignments intensify ahead of the next electoral cycle.
