Labour Party Courts PDP Chieftain Segun Showunmi for Ogun 2027 Governorship Ticket
Ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State, the Labour Party (LP) has intensified its early political consultations by reaching out to a prominent figure within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Segun Showunmi, to consider emerging as its governorship candidate.
The development was confirmed following a courtesy visit by top Labour Party officials to Showunmi’s private residence in the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Ibara, Abeokuta. The delegation was led by the party’s South West Vice Chairman, Abayomi Arabambi, alongside the Ogun State Chairman of the party, Mrs Olubukola Soyoye. The visit, which took place over the weekend, marked the first publicly acknowledged attempt by the LP to court a high-profile political figure ahead of the 2027 race in the state.
During the meeting, party leaders reportedly conveyed their admiration for Showunmi’s political trajectory, civic engagements, and advocacy for governance reforms. The LP described him as a consistent voice for democratic values, equity, and social justice, noting that these principles align closely with the party’s ideological outlook and vision for Ogun State.
Speaking on behalf of the party, Arabambi criticised the current All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government in Ogun State, accusing it of failing to significantly improve the living conditions of residents. He argued that widespread infrastructural decay, struggling public schools, and controversial urban development policies had left many citizens dissatisfied and eager for change.

According to Arabambi, the Labour Party believes that Ogun State residents deserve a new direction in leadership, one that prioritises inclusive governance and people-centered development. He stated that Showunmi’s experience, political pedigree, and public profile made him a strong candidate capable of offering what he described as “a refreshing alternative” to the status quo.
The party also stressed that it could no longer accept what it termed the marginalisation of citizens in their own state, urging voters to consider a different political platform in 2027. LP leaders framed their outreach to Showunmi as part of a broader strategy to build a formidable opposition capable of mounting a serious challenge to the ruling party.
In his response, Showunmi expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing the invitation as a significant honour. He acknowledged the Labour Party’s growing relevance in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly following its performance in the 2023 general elections, where it secured millions of votes nationwide.
Showunmi noted that the LP, in his view, represents a party with a relatively clear ideological foundation, drawing parallels with labour-oriented political movements in countries such as China and Brazil. He argued that a political party that garnered such widespread support in a national election should not be dismissed as inconsequential.
However, the PDP chieftain made it clear that he would not rush into any decision. He emphasised that any potential move would require deep reflection and wide consultation, given his long-standing association with the PDP, which dates back to 1998. Showunmi disclosed that he would consult key political stakeholders, including President Bola Tinubu, former Ogun State governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, as well as the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, before making up his mind.
He added that leaving a political platform he had invested years in would not be an easy decision, but acknowledged that political transitions often require courage and a willingness to step out of one’s comfort zone. Showunmi also hinted at his confidence in his preparedness for the governorship race, stating that, based on his assessment, he considers himself highly qualified for the task ahead.
The Labour Party’s move has already generated mixed reactions within political circles, with supporters viewing it as a bold attempt to strengthen the opposition, while critics question both the party’s internal cohesion and the likelihood of Showunmi defecting from the PDP.
As the 2027 election cycle gradually approaches, the unfolding developments underscore the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where early alliances, strategic overtures, and cross-party negotiations are beginning to shape the political landscape in Ogun State.
