Gunmen Attack Police Station in Ondo Community, Trigger Panic Ahead of Crossover Services
Tension gripped the Ipele-Owo community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Wednesday night following an attack on a police station by suspected bandits, an incident that sparked widespread panic and disrupted activities in the area. The assault occurred around 10:00 pm, at a time when many residents, particularly Christians, were preparing to attend crossover church services ahead of the New Year.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers arrived in the community in a coordinated manner and immediately began shooting sporadically, creating fear and confusion among residents. The sound of gunfire reportedly echoed through the area, forcing many people to abandon their homes and flee into nearby bushes in search of safety.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity due to security concerns, described the attack as intense and well-organised. The source claimed that the assailants, estimated to be about 20 in number, operated in what was described as a “commando-style” approach before targeting the police divisional station in Ipele.
“It was a terrorist-like attack,” the eyewitness said. “They came in numbers and started shooting heavily. People were running in different directions because no one knew where the next bullet would come from. Many of us ran into the bush because staying at home was no longer safe.”

During the attack, the police station was reportedly set on fire, resulting in significant damage to the facility. While details regarding casualties or the extent of losses were not immediately available, the burning of the station marked a serious escalation in security concerns within the community.
Residents described the experience as terrifying, noting that the intensity of the gunfire made it impossible for anyone to stand their ground. The attack effectively brought normal life in the area to a halt, with families prioritising escape over celebration on a night that is usually marked by religious gatherings and festivities.
When contacted for official confirmation, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Jimoh Abayomi, acknowledged that the incident occurred. However, he stated that comprehensive details were still being compiled at the time of the inquiry.
“Yes, the incident happened, but details are still sketchy,” Abayomi said. “We will provide more information once we have a clearer picture of what transpired.”
In response to the attack, security operatives were reportedly deployed to the Ipele-Owo community to restore calm and prevent further violence. The presence of security forces was aimed at reassuring residents and stabilising the situation following the overnight unrest.
The incident has added to growing concerns about security in parts of Ondo State and neighbouring regions, as residents continue to call for stronger measures to protect lives and property. While investigations into the attack are expected to commence, community members remain anxious about the possibility of further violence.
