Nigerian Drug Suspect Arrested on Koh Pha Ngan After Evading Court Proceedings in Thailand
A Nigerian national, identified as Ukoma Jefta Nuzbech, has been arrested by Thai law enforcement authorities on Koh Pha Ngan Island after months of evading court proceedings linked to an earlier drug trafficking case. The arrest took place on January 14, following intelligence reports that led police to his location.
According to Thai police, Nuzbech was initially arrested in March 2025 after allegedly delivering 25.71 grams of cocaine to an undercover police officer. The transaction reportedly occurred in the parking area of a hospital in Phuket, raising concerns about the brazenness of the operation. Following his arrest, Nuzbech was granted bail under conditions that required him to appear in court to face charges related to the possession and distribution of illegal drugs.
However, authorities said the suspect failed to appear for his scheduled court hearings and subsequently went into hiding. Investigators allege that during this period, Nuzbech continued engaging in drug trafficking activities, operating between Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan, two popular tourist islands in southern Thailand.
Acting on a tip-off, law enforcement officers set up a roadblock on Koh Pha Ngan after confirming the suspect’s movements. Police stopped a white Mitsubishi Mirage in which Nuzbech was travelling. Officers reported that the suspect resisted arrest, prompting them to forcibly enter the vehicle to apprehend him.
A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered 1.18 grams of cocaine, 50,280 Thai baht in cash, and a mobile phone. According to police statements, the phone contained messages believed to be related to drug transactions. Investigators also noted that the messages suggested a connection to a 29-year-old Thai woman, whose bank account QR code was allegedly used to receive payments for drug sales.
Following his arrest, Nuzbech was taken into custody and formally charged with possession of illegal drugs with intent to sell. Under Thai law, this offence carries severe penalties, including a possible prison sentence of up to 10 years and a fine of up to one million baht if convicted.
Thai authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the drug distribution network allegedly linked to the suspect. Police are working to identify possible accomplices, including individuals who may have assisted with logistics, financial transactions, or concealment while the suspect was evading the judicial process.
The case has attracted public attention in Thailand and abroad, particularly due to the involvement of a foreign national and the locations where the alleged activities took place. Drug-related offences are treated seriously under Thai law, and foreign nationals convicted of such crimes often face lengthy prison sentences, fines, and eventual deportation after serving their terms.
Officials reiterated their commitment to enforcing drug laws and ensuring that individuals who attempt to evade justice are tracked down and prosecuted accordingly. They also emphasized that cooperation between intelligence units and local police remains critical in combating transnational drug trafficking networks.
As of the time of reporting, Nuzbech remains in police custody while further investigations continue. Authorities are expected to provide additional updates as the case progresses through the Thai judicial system.
