Speculation Grows as Kano APC Chairman Says Governor Abba Yusuf May Defect to APC This Week
Political uncertainty continues to build in Kano State following comments by the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Abbas, who stated that Governor Abba Yusuf may soon defect to the ruling party. Abbas disclosed that the governor could register and collect an APC membership card as early as Tuesday or Wednesday, a development that has drawn significant attention across the state’s political landscape.
Abbas made the remarks while addressing about 1,500 ad hoc staff recruited to support the APC’s ongoing electronic membership registration exercise in Kano State. According to him, the commencement of the registration process in the state was deliberately delayed due to the absence of key political figures, including former Kano State Governor and APC leader, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, as well as Governor Yusuf himself.
He explained that both leaders had travelled to Abuja for consultations and were expected to return to Kano after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Abbas said the party considered it inappropriate to begin the e-registration exercise without giving room for all prospective members, including high-profile political figures, to participate.
“Be on standby. We may call on you tomorrow, Tuesday, depending on the arrival of the party leader, Ganduje, and the governor in Kano, so that you can start the work. But it will not exceed Wednesday,” Abbas told the ad hoc staff.
According to the APC chairman, the party was mindful of widespread reports suggesting that Governor Yusuf was considering defecting to the APC. He said delaying the registration process was a strategic decision aimed at ensuring inclusiveness and fairness.

“Everybody is aware of the news of the governor’s defection, and we felt it was not polite to hurriedly commence the process without giving them the opportunity to join the party,” Abbas stated.
He emphasized that the electronic registration exercise would begin no later than Wednesday, adding that Kano State is expected to record one of the highest numbers of new APC members nationwide. Abbas noted that the party’s ambition is to surpass even Lagos State in terms of new registrations.
The APC chairman urged registration officials to register all interested individuals without discrimination, stressing that the exercise is open to everyone regardless of status or background. He also announced that local government areas and wards that attract the highest number of new members would receive recognition and rewards from the party.
Abbas described the training of ad hoc staff as a crucial step in ensuring a credible registration process. He explained that formal registration is mandatory for anyone who intends to be a full member of the APC, noting that unregistered individuals would not be eligible to vote or contest for positions within the party.
He further revealed that while the APC had already commenced the e-registration exercise in other states about two weeks earlier, political developments in Kano made it necessary to delay the process locally. The party, he said, opted to wait in order to accommodate all interested parties, particularly in light of reports surrounding the governor’s possible defection.
Abbas reaffirmed that the APC remains open to all Nigerians, including political leaders, youths, and ordinary citizens. He acknowledged the economic difficulties facing many Nigerians but expressed optimism that conditions would improve before the next general election.
The party chairman also disclosed that the APC’s national leadership had completed the training of key state officials and coordinators, and that the registration exercise would continue until the end of the month. He hinted that strong political support at the grassroots level could translate into future political benefits for local governments and wards.
Finally, Abbas stated that only individuals with valid Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and National Identity cards would be eligible for electronic registration. He explained that accurate documentation is essential for proper planning and the overall success of the party’s electoral strategy.
While Governor Yusuf has not publicly confirmed plans to defect, the APC chairman’s comments have intensified political discussions in Kano, with observers closely watching developments expected to unfold in the coming days.
