A tragic incident has shaken residents of Yanbula community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State following the alleged killing of a 70-year-old woman, Hauwa Abubakar, by her step-grandson, Ibrahim Mutari, aged 20.

According to reports, the incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2026. Hauwa Abubakar, who was described by family members as a caring and supportive figure within the household, was allegedly attacked in her home. The suspect reportedly fled the scene shortly after the incident.

The husband of the deceased, Abubakar Shuaibu, condemned the act in strong terms, describing it as cruel and deeply disturbing. He alleged that the suspect attacked his wife before escaping, leaving the family in shock and grief. Community members who later became aware of the incident expressed sadness over the violent loss of an elderly woman known for her kindness.

Further details provided by Ummi Ahmed, a daughter of the deceased, shed light on a longstanding family dispute that may have preceded the tragedy. According to her, the suspect had previously been involved in a violent altercation with his younger brother, Musa, sometime last year. During that incident, Musa allegedly stabbed Ibrahim in the stomach, an injury that required hospital treatment.

Ummi Ahmed stated that while Ibrahim was receiving medical care, he allegedly made statements suggesting he intended to seek revenge against members of the family. She claimed that medical personnel at the hospital had warned the family at the time, describing the suspect’s utterances as dangerous and urging caution.

“Ibrahim vowed to take revenge on either the children of the deceased or their mother while he was in the hospital,” Ummi said. “Sadly, he has now carried out that threat.”

She further revealed that despite the tension and the alleged threats, the deceased continued to show compassion toward the suspect. According to her account, Hauwa Abubakar personally took care of Ibrahim throughout his hospital stay, ensuring he received attention and support until he was discharged.

“She took care of him during his treatment and showed him nothing but kindness,” Ummi lamented. “It is painful that despite everything she did for him, he still went ahead to kill her.”

Additional background information revealed that the deceased played a significant role in the family long before the incident. After Ibrahim’s biological mother reportedly died during his childhood, Hauwa Abubakar was said to have helped raise him. Family sources stated that the suspect’s father, in appreciation of her care and support, brought her into his home and treated her as his own mother until his death.

Residents of Yanbula community described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that it involved close family members and an elderly woman who was widely regarded as peaceful. The case has since drawn attention from security operatives, who are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Authorities have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspect, who remains at large as of the time of this report. Law enforcement agencies have urged anyone with useful information regarding his whereabouts to come forward, assuring the public that the matter will be thoroughly investigated.

The incident has also sparked discussions online, with some commentators linking rising violent crimes to broader social and economic challenges in the country, while others cautioned against drawing conclusions before the completion of investigations.

As investigations continue, the family of the deceased and members of the community await justice, hoping the case will be resolved and measures taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
