Lagos Completes 9km Rehabilitation on Lekki–Ajah Corridor, Finishes Ahead of Schedule

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has confirmed the completion of rehabilitation works on a 9-kilometre stretch of the Lekki–Ajah corridor, covering the section from Chevron to Admiralty in the Lagos-bound direction.

According to an official statement, the project was initially scheduled to last 41 days but was completed in 27 days, significantly ahead of timeline. Authorities attributed the accelerated pace to the need to ease traffic congestion along one of Lagos’ busiest commuter routes.

The completed section forms part of a larger 28-kilometre corridor rehabilitation project stretching from the Lekki–Ajah Bridge to Admiralty, encompassing both carriageways. The government noted that the project is being executed in phases to reduce disruption to motorists and residents within the axis.

Officials acknowledged the heavy traffic that characterizes the Lekki–Ajah route, particularly during peak hours, stating that the decision to fast-track the Lagos-bound carriageway was influenced by the daily commuting burden faced by thousands of road users.

Work on the Epe-bound lane is expected to begin shortly, as the state continues phased improvements across the corridor. Traffic management measures are expected to remain in place during subsequent construction phases, with authorities promising close monitoring and deployment of personnel to manage vehicular flow.

The Lekki–Ajah corridor serves as a critical arterial route connecting residential, commercial, and business districts within the rapidly expanding Lekki peninsula. The area has experienced substantial population growth and real estate development over the past decade, intensifying pressure on existing road infrastructure.

Residents and commuters have frequently raised concerns over prolonged travel times, deteriorating road surfaces, and traffic bottlenecks, especially around major junctions such as Chevron and Ajah Bridge. The state government has previously identified the corridor as a priority infrastructure zone due to its economic significance.

Public reaction to the completion announcement has been mixed. Some residents welcomed the development, expressing optimism that improved road conditions would reduce travel time and vehicle maintenance costs. Others, however, questioned the scope of the completed work, noting that rehabilitation efforts have so far covered only one direction of the corridor.

A number of commuters expressed concern about the potential traffic congestion that may arise once construction begins on the Epe-bound carriageway. Analysts note that traffic disruptions are likely during that phase, particularly given the limited alternative routes available within the Lekki axis.

Infrastructure experts have also emphasized the importance of complementary measures such as clear road markings, functional traffic lights, and consistent enforcement of traffic regulations to maximize the benefits of the newly rehabilitated stretch. Proper drainage systems and durable construction materials, they add, will be critical to ensuring the road’s longevity, especially during the rainy season.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to maintaining active traffic management throughout the remaining phases of the project. Officials stated that they will continue to monitor progress and engage relevant agencies to minimize inconvenience to the public.

The Lekki–Ajah corridor upgrade is part of broader efforts by the state government to improve road infrastructure across key economic hubs. As Lagos continues to expand, transport infrastructure remains central to addressing congestion challenges and supporting commercial activities within the state.

With the Lagos-bound carriageway now reopened following rehabilitation, attention will shift to the next phase of works. Stakeholders will be closely watching how effectively traffic is managed during construction on the opposite lane, as the state moves toward completing the full 28-kilometre corridor upgrade.
