Abuja Is Safe, Secure, Wike Assures Residents
As FCT Minister Inspects Key Infrastructure Projects in Wuye and Kuje
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has assured residents and visitors that Abuja remains one of the safest cities in Nigeria. He emphasized that the FCT Administration, in collaboration with security agencies, is working tirelessly to sustain peace and protect lives and property across the capital.
Wike made this known on Saturday, October 4, 2025, during an inspection tour of ongoing projects, including the Wuye District Infrastructure and the Federal Highway 105, which stretches from the Umar Musa Yar’Adua Expressway to Kuje township. The Minister noted that while no city is entirely free from incidents, Abuja continues to enjoy relative stability and improved security compared to previous years.
‘If There’s One Safe City in Nigeria, It’s Abuja’ — Wike
Addressing questions on recent security concerns, Wike insisted that the FCT remains the safest urban area in the country. According to him, occasional incidents should not overshadow the substantial improvements achieved in the security landscape.
“If there is one safe city in this country, I think Abuja is that city,” the Minister declared confidently. He explained that the administration’s ongoing “Light Up Abuja” initiative—which involves the installation of solar-powered streetlights across major roads and districts—is a key part of the government’s broader security enhancement strategy.
He further added, “The problem we have is that when one incident happens, people forget that for months, nothing happened. You should give us and the security agencies credit for doing a lot to keep Abuja safe. We agree that something may happen occasionally, but that does not mean Abuja is unsafe. The truth is, Abuja remains one of the safest cities in Nigeria.”
Minister Commends Progress on Major Projects
Speaking on the infrastructure projects inspected, Barrister Wike expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work. He commended Arab Contractors, the construction firm handling the Wuye District Infrastructure, for their commitment to excellence, revealing that the project is nearing completion and that the main access road should be ready within 10 days.
“For anyone familiar with this area, you can see the transformation. Arab Contractors have done a commendable job. The landscape looks beautiful, and with continued support, this project will soon be completed. We are confident that by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s third anniversary in office, this road will be among those inaugurated to the delight of residents,” Wike said.
He also highlighted significant progress on the 8-lane Airport Road to Kuje dual carriageway, describing it as a transformative project that will drastically reduce travel time between Kuje and the Abuja city center. “Once completed, residents of Kuje will be able to reach the city in just 15 to 20 minutes. This is real development—this is what the Renewed Hope Agenda represents,” he stated.

Infrastructure Development To Enhance Urban Growth
The Minister stressed that the scale of infrastructure currently being executed in the FCT has never been witnessed before. He noted that the ongoing projects will not only improve transportation and connectivity but also encourage residents to settle in satellite towns like Kuje instead of crowding the city center.
“The level of infrastructure we are seeing today is unprecedented. With this kind of development, people living in Kuje no longer need to move into the city to enjoy convenience. When this 8-lane road is commissioned, it will redefine urban living in Abuja,” Wike affirmed.
Wike Vows To Tackle Sanitation Challenges
Addressing the issue of waste management and environmental cleanliness, Wike revealed that the FCT Administration has intensified efforts to clear refuse along major corridors such as the Airport Road and the Nyanya–Karshi axis. He said the administration is in the process of awarding new contracts for refuse collection and disposal, with a focus on engaging competent and efficient contractors.
“We believe that within the next two weeks, new contracts for refuse disposal will be formally awarded. This will greatly improve the city’s cleanliness and enhance public health,” the Minister stated.
Commitment To President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda
Wike reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” emphasizing that the ongoing infrastructure drive is part of a broader vision to make Abuja a model capital city in Africa. According to him, the administration is determined to ensure that development reaches all districts, improve road connectivity, and promote security and environmental sustainability.
He said, “Everything we are doing is to support the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President. We want residents to see and feel the difference in governance, infrastructure, and quality of life. Abuja must remain a place that gives hope to Nigerians and represents the true image of a modern capital city.”
Public Reactions
Following the Minister’s remarks, Nigerians shared mixed reactions online. Some applauded Wike’s developmental strides and resilience despite political distractions, while others expressed skepticism, citing reports of recent security incidents in parts of the capital.
On social media, user LordBiden wrote, “Nice one, Uncle Wike. Even with distractions from every corner, he is still doing his best.” Another user, adetoya234, countered, “The public should not mind him. He is known for talking under the influence. Abuja isn’t as safe as he claims.”
Others, like Zionmdde, accused politicians of downplaying insecurity: “Whenever you hear a Nigerian politician say a place is safe, people are being robbed and killed. All they care about is their government’s image.”
Meanwhile, supporters say Wike’s inspection tours and visible infrastructure projects prove his hands-on leadership style, describing him as one of the most active ministers in the Tinubu administration.
