Gov Eno Orders Immediate Assessment of Potholes in Uyo for Repairs
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has directed the Ministry of Works to commence an immediate and comprehensive assessment of potholes and failed portions of roads within the Uyo metropolis, with a view to initiating urgent repairs.
The directive, which was contained in an official statement released on Saturday, October 25, by the Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, underscores the state government’s renewed commitment to maintaining road infrastructure and ensuring safer, more efficient movement for residents and motorists across the capital city.
According to the statement, Governor Eno’s decision follows reports of widespread road deterioration in parts of Uyo caused by the heavy and prolonged rainfall experienced over the past several weeks. The governor, it said, has instructed the Ministry of Works to carry out a detailed scoping exercise to identify potholes and weak road sections that require urgent intervention before they worsen.
“The State Government is aware of the potholes that have appeared on some roads as a result of the heavy and prolonged rainfall in recent weeks,” the statement read in part. “As the rains subside, rehabilitation work will begin in earnest to ensure proper and durable reconstruction of the affected portions.”
Beyond road repairs, the government also plans to undertake a major desilting and clearing exercise in drainages and water channels across Uyo. This, according to the release, is aimed at addressing the recurrent flooding problem that worsens during the rainy season and often contributes to road damage.

Governor Eno, who has consistently emphasized infrastructure maintenance as a key component of his administration’s ARISE Agenda, reaffirmed that the government remains fully committed to both the construction of new projects and the preservation of existing infrastructure. The statement noted that while the state is currently constructing and rehabilitating more than 964 kilometers of new and inherited roads and bridges, routine maintenance remains a top priority.
“Beyond building new infrastructure, we are equally focused on ensuring the sustainability of what already exists. Maintenance is key to durability, safety, and the overall appeal of our cities,” the Information Commissioner added.
The initiative aligns with the administration’s broader infrastructure development thrust, which aims to improve urban aesthetics, ease traffic congestion, and create an enabling environment for business growth and social development.
Mr. Umanah urged residents and motorists in the state capital to exercise patience and understanding as the Ministry of Works begins its intervention. He assured the public that all necessary logistics and arrangements are being finalized to ensure that road maintenance efforts are carried out efficiently and promptly.
“This government listens to the people and acts swiftly in response to their concerns. We appeal to citizens to bear with us as we deploy teams to the affected areas,” he said.
Over the past year, the Eno administration has launched multiple infrastructure projects across Akwa Ibom State, including the completion of strategic road networks in local government areas such as Ikot Ekpene, Eket, and Oron. The latest directive to address potholes in Uyo is seen as part of the governor’s determination to consolidate those gains and sustain the state’s reputation for clean, well-maintained urban centers.
Residents have welcomed the news with optimism, expressing hope that the intervention will restore smooth driving conditions and reduce travel time within the metropolis. Commercial drivers and commuters in particular say the move is timely, given the damage caused by seasonal rainfall to major routes like Abak Road, Oron Road, and Aka Road.
As the dry season approaches, expectations are high that the government’s swift response will translate into visible improvements on the city’s roads, reinforcing Governor Eno’s pledge to deliver quality governance and people-oriented development across Akwa Ibom State.
